On Saturday, May 13, a beautiful Bay Area day, friends and family gathered at the Campanile Esplanade to watch as the 2006 graduates of the UC Berkeley School of Information received their diplomas. The class of 2006 included 39 Master's students and four doctoral students. This was the seventh graduating class of the new School of Information (formerly the School of Information Management & Systems) and the largest group of doctoral students to earn their degrees since the school's inception.

Dean AnnaLee Saxenian welcomed the crowd of nearly 400 well wishers and introduced commencement
speaker Tim O’Reilly, founder and CEO of
O’Reilly Media. Tim's talk
was both thought-provoking and inspirational and was the perfect send off for the new graduates.
Master's students Sarita Yardi and Lilia Manguy
were selected as the student speakers for the class of 2006. Both reflected on their two years in
the Master's program and thanked faculty, staff, and fellow students for making the experience an
enriching and rewarding one. Lilia concluded her address with an original composition, the iSchool Commencement Rap.
Students also honored two faculty members with awards. The Distinguished Teaching Award was
presented to Professor John Chuang and Professor Larry Downes received the Distinguished Mentor
Award.
Finally, Dean Saxenian announced the winners of the 2006 Dr. James R. Chen Awards for
outstanding Master's final projects before concluding the ceremony with the awarding of
degrees.
