Lab 1

August 28

Objective

Learn HTML; begin your personal SIMS web site by building a home page. The understanding is you will continue to add information to your site over the next two years, but you should have at least a simple home page available by the end of class. Be sure to make your web page professional; you will be using this to advertise yourself for jobs and internships. (It is ok to have personal information on your web site too, but that should be available from a link off of the home page; it should not be the primary focus of the home page.)

If you have only used a WYSIWYG editor in the past, and thus do not know what HTML code looks like, this is a good time to learn what HTML commands look like.

How to do this

  1. Obtain your SIMS username and password from Roberta.
  2. Create the home page for your web site. You may want to use TextPad or Dreamweaver 4, although if you prefer another editor that is fine.
You can find DreamWeaver by clicking on the Start icon in the lower lefthand corner of the monitor (if you logged into a Windows machine) and then selecting Programs > Web Publishing. DreamWeaver has an online tutorial.
  3. Save the main document (your home page) as index.html in your public_html folder. This folder is located under your home directory (/home/username in UNIX and H:\ in Windows).
  4. Create supporting documents and link them to your index. Typical supporting documents include resumes, projects & courses, and pictures.
  5. Once your home page is ready, send an email to webmaster@sims.berkeley.edu requesting that your web site be linked to your name in the Masters 2004 directory.
