Day 2: Overview of Flickr as an application

Goals for today

Please bring your notebook computer if you can. I really appreciate those who are willing to share their computers with others.

Outline for today:

Assignments

Due date: Tuesday, Jan 24 at 6pm

  1. Set up a Flickr account for yourself, if you have not already done so. If you are not comfortable mixing up your "real Flickr account" with one to be used in the class, I'd suggest setting up a new one for the purpose of the class. I have inforemix for the class, in addition to my Raymond Yee account.

  2. In the spirit of sharing with us something about who you are, place one of your Flickr photos into our InfoRemix group. Keep in mind that this group is public. I will demo placing A favorite: winter mellon soup into the group. Before you can do this task, you will need to join the group, a process that will require my approval. Tell us a little story about the picture.

  3. To demonstrate that you have at least looked around a bit at Flickr photos, please post a comment (as a reply to An interesting Berkeley photo in Flickr. pointing to a Flickr photo about Berkeley. Write a sentence or two explaining what you find interesting about it.

  4. Write me a paragraph in email that tells what your current interests for a project are. Try to be as specific as you can. For instance, if you are interested in mapping, tell me what you want to map and where. Tell me what skills you bring to the task and what type of help you are looking for, including any partners. This is a start of a dialogue that we start to carry out among the whole class. If you send in your email by tomorrow at 6pm, I will have it read by the time I see you again on Wednesday.

  5. In your email, tell me the URL of your Flickr account you are using for the exercises, should it not be obvious who you are from the URL of the Flickr account.

  6. Read Continuous Computing Blog: Social Machines and be prepared to discuss it on Wednesday in class.

  7. Set up a blogger account if you don't already have one.

  8. Set up a bloglines account if you don't already have one.
