Assignment 1
Usability Heuristics
Pick a web site that you use
(not one that you have designed). It can be related to your final
project -- e.g., a site that you plan to evaluate, or one like it.
Following the readings on usability heuristics:
-
Develop a set of heuristics
for the site. You can begin with Nielsen's and/or Instone's, but
you must modify them and add to them to customize them to your site.
(Make it clear in your write-up how you modified those you began with.)
Present them in 1-2 pages.
-
Reflect on the process of developing
your heuristics: what were your considerations? How did you come
to the ones that you did? E.g., it's often what drives us crazy that
suggests new heuristics, whereas what a site does well is often transparent
to us. Write a couple of paragraphs about this.
-
Evaluate the site, and write
a 2-page report to the designers telling them how the site did and what
needs to be changed. Recommendations for changes must be tied to
the heuristics violated; they can't simply be 'good ideas' or 'obvious.'
-
Write a 1-2 paragraph reflection
on what you learned in doing this assignment.
