IS214. Assignment 2. Surveys
Lots of web sites include
surveys of users. Many of them are done well; many of them are done
poorly.
Choose a site for which you
will draft a short survey. It can be related to your final project.
Other possibilities:
-
The SIMS web site
-
The UC Berkeley main page
-
The Berkeley Elib project http://elib.cs.berkeley.edu
-
A site that you use often (one
that you use is better than one that you have created)
You will draft a short
survey of users. But to begin with you must consider (and report)
what is your purpose in doing the survey? How will you use the information?
Draft your web survey. Include a mix of open-ended and closed-ended
questions. ( A
key question that you will need to consider: who do you expect your users
to be, and what do you need to do to accomodate your survey to the variety
of users?)
Before you turn it in,
pre-test it on at least 3 people. You want them to be as much
like your target users as possible, although time and other constraints
may mean that you only use your fellow students. Revise it based
on your pre-tests.
Turn in:
-
A short rationale: who are your
expected users, what do you want to know about/from them, and WHY?
How will you use this information once you get it?
-
The first draft that you pre-tested.
-
The revised survey, with a brief
discussion of what you needed to change based on your pre-tests.
-
A brief plan addressing how
it would be administered. Explicitly consider the lack of cooperation
that is common among Web user surveys.
